Shapes and Sounds

Each participant is asked to list all the shapes of the character set in any order of preference, picking them up from a basket of shapes printed (displayed) on stiff cardboard.

Once the list is made, the player is given the full character map set, with the associated sounds, and told to write down the phonetic sound of each character next to it. The two lists are written side by side on paper.

The lists of all the players are compared, and the players discuss differences in their preferences.

Make a Picture

The characters are kept ready in large numbers printed (displayed) on pieces of cardboard. Using any number and style of characters, the participants must make pictures. Each participant gets to vote (+1, -1) on each of the pictures made by the other players. The largest number of positive votes wins. The activity facilitator takes and keeps photographs of all the pictures.

The Cryptic Clue

The objective of the game is to guess who has written a particular sentence.

Each participant, using the NayaNa character map provided, has to write a short sentence (5-6 words) about themselves on a piece of paper, using any language of her choice. The piece of paper is then folded twice and then placed in a jar. The jar is shaken to mix up the folded papers.

The participants take turns to remove one folded paper each from the jar. Each one will then read out the sentence, and try to guess who has written it.

This game will help new users to quickly learn how to use the NayaNa script, through a series of games that encourage rapid absorption of the shapes of the various phonetic characters, their associated sounds, and how to link them with modifications of the basic sounds (mostly vowel modifications). The individual exercises have been created as individual wikipages - 1 (The Cryptic Clue), 2 (Make a Picture, 3 (Shapes and Sounds).
